01 / Xero · Global payroll payments

Pay employees directly in payroll, globally.

I led discovery and design from 0→1 for UK wage payments, moving from manual bank file exports to native in-app payments. For AU superannuation, I led discovery and design for Payday Super compliance changes and modernisation.

The product problem

A payroll payment involves more than a button. The person preparing the pay run may not be the person allowed to authorise the payment. Banks and providers expose different capabilities. When a payment fails, someone needs a clear reason and a safe way to recover.

My work connected customer research, regional requirements and partner constraints into a reusable experience that could flex for each market.

Three decisions that shaped the experience

  • Check capability early. For UK wages, expose whether a bank supports the required payment flow before the customer commits to setup.
  • Separate preparation from approval. In Australian superannuation, make authoriser roles explicit and support the handoff between the person preparing a payment and the person approving it.
  • Design the recovery path. Show the reason, state and next action when contributions are returned or fail, reducing the need for customers to seek manual help.

My contribution and outcome

For UK wage payments, I led discovery and design from 0→1, translating customer needs, bank capabilities and third-party constraints into a native in-app payment journey.

For AU superannuation, I led discovery and design for Payday Super compliance changes and modernisation, connecting regulatory requirements with the customer journey across preparation, approval and exception recovery.

Across both workstreams, I used customer research and product data to inform decisions and worked with product, engineering and regional teams toward a scalable foundation for wages, retirement contributions and future payment types.

Detailed product screens and internal measures are deliberately not published. I can discuss the decisions, measurement approach and my contribution in an appropriate interview setting.
